Treating Common Adolescent Injuries

Treating Common Adolescent Injuries

Teens may feel invincible, but young people are just as vulnerable to accidents and injuries as everyone else. The most common injuries include abrasions, falls, sprains, and fractures. While you may think your teen can just bounce back after an accident, lack of proper medical treatment can lead to improper healing and permanent consequences. Palm Wellness Center offers physical rehabilitation to ensure a successful recovery after the two most common types of injuries experienced by teens: car accident injuries and sports injuries.

Sports Injuries

Student athletes are at higher risk of sports injuries, especially during training. Here are some common sports injuries among teenagers:

ACL Injury: An ACL injury is caused by a torn ligament in the knee. This happens when athletes make a quick change in the direction of their movement, or when they make a jump and land in a difficult position, twisting the knee. The treatment for ACL is surgery. To help heal the injured ligament faster, physical rehabilitation is highly recommended.

Sprains: A sprain is the overstretching or tearing of ligaments. The injury can happen on the ankles, legs, wrists, or hands. Young athletes experience sprains when they accidentally fall during training or in the actual game. It may not be as bad as a break or dislocation, but it can cause severe pain, swelling, and immobility for a period of time.

Dislocation and Fractures: Being active in sports puts children at risk of fractures and dislocations. Good thing they are still young and recuperate faster. However, the situation varies depending on the severity and location of the injury. Patients may opt for physical therapy to speed up the healing and recovery process.

Car Accident Injuries

Car accidents are one of the major causes of injuries among teenagers. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), hundreds of teens are injured in car accidents every day. In fact, 258,000 teen drivers were treated in emergency rooms due to car accident injuries in 2019, resulting in billions of dollars of medical and work-loss costs.

Here are some of the common injuries suffered by teens in car accidents:

  • Head Injuries
  • Broken Bones
  • Hemorrhage
  • Spine Injuries
  • Contusions

Many teens are adventurous risk-takers, increasing their likelihood of injuries. These injuries can negatively impact their growth, development, and even their mental health, if not given proper treatment and medical attention. Physical therapy is one of the most effective and proven interventions for injury recovery in people ranging from children to adults.
